Eight years ago, when we had just opened Galería Mar Dulce, Tulio de Sagastizábal, with his characteristic generosity, lent us his (very well known) name and gifted us an exhibition, a retrospective of his artistic production between 2005 and 2010. In Winter Work’, we picked up the thread from 2010 until the present day.

Almost all the works in this exhibition were made during autumn or winter, seasons in which the artist accommodates himself in his workshop with heater and mate to work in small format. In his words: “When April arrives, almost as a reflex, I start working small – mainly on paper – and using a technique that I adore, that of gouache. New ideas appear in the small works, along with the desire to experiment with newly-discovered or never-used images. It is the most purely artesan moment, I think, in my work. With the small works, I always hope to reach the point of surprise, discovery and visual effect.”

As with all his production, the works are in series: he selects a small geometric shape or a simple continuous line and allows a spontaneous and unconscious dialogue to flow between form and colour. The works do not refer to the external world but to the material and the immediacy of the process itself, with the aim of painting with the same ease and fluency with which one speaks. “I change direction a lot, I cover everything up and I do it again, so that the story of the painting slowly detaches itself from its own materiality, as if the painting were discovering itself, before realizing that it has to interact with the outside world.” Within the series, one work leads to another in a continuously unfolding discourse, which advances, hesitates, restarts but never ends. The works do not propose to provide answers, but rather are presented as “fragments of a possibility”, or of a multitude of possibilities. Gathered together to create an exhibition, in large murals or – as is the case in this exhibition – as individual pieces, together they form a small ecosystem that seems to live and breathe. The geometries are those of the organic world, from the simplest to the most complex. The works convey the journey of their creation, full of love and the burden of life. It is a journey that could have been otherwise, and could still be, because the works encompass all possibilities, uncertainties and hopes of all the moments of life.

The exhibition ‘Winter Work’ commences with a single work from the series The Sun in Shadow (2010), with which we closed its last exhibition at Galería Mar Dulce. It passes through the series Meteors (2015), Giardini (2016), Colorama 1 and 2 (2017) and presents for the first time Colorama 3 (2018) and Lines of Force (2018).
